KANSAS NATIONAL GUARD SUPPORTS VETERANS DAY EVENTS ACROSS KANSAS

In observance of Veterans Day, the Kansas National Guard will be supporting numerous celebrations across the state.

Events scheduled for Nov. 7

El Dorado - The 731st Transportation Company, Kansas National Guard, will be participating in a Celebration of Freedom.  The event runs from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a parade at 11 a.m. in downtown El Dorado.

Iola – Headquarters Support Company/Forward Support Company, 891st Engineer Battalion, will participate in the Iola Veterans Day parade.  Soldiers from both companies will be carrying a large flag in the parade and driving tactical vehicles. The parade starts at 11 a.m.  At the start of the parade, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army National Guard, will fly over.

Events scheduled for Nov. 8

Girard – Staff Sgt. Bruce Curry, Girard, 772nd Engineer Company, will be the guest speaker at the American Legion Post 26, 144 E 47 Highway, Girard.  The ceremony starts at 6 p.m.

Rose Hill – Members of the 184th Intelligence Wing will be posting and retiring the colors at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Rose Hill Christian Church, 314 N. Rose Hill Road. The event starts at 6 p.m.

Topeka – Lt. Col. Roger Aeschliman, Topeka, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony being hosted by the Break Point Church.  The event will start at 6 p.m. and is being held at the Southwest Topeka YMCA, 3635 Chelsea Drive.

Events scheduled for Nov. 11

Topeka - Maj. Gen. Tod M. Bunting, the adjutant general, and Chaplain (Col.) Don Davidson, Topeka, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas, will be speaking at a Veterans Day ceremony hosted by Jardine Middle School, 2600 S.W. 33rd.  The ceremony starts at 1:45 p.m.

Topeka – Col. John Andrew, Topeka, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, will be the guest speaker at VFW Post 1650, 3110 SW Huntoon, Topeka.  The ceremony starts at 11 a.m.

Topeka – Chaplain (Col.) Don Davidson, Topeka, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas, will be speaking at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Hospital, 1700 S.W. 7th Street.

Topeka - Lt. Col. Mike Erwin, Topeka, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, will be the guest speaker for the American Legion Capitol Post 1, 3800 SE Michigan Ave.  The program begins at 11 a.m.

Topeka – Master Sgt. Rod Moyer, Topeka, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 635th Support Group, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony at Capital City High School, 2828 SW 6th Ave.  The ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m.

Topeka – Sgt. 1st Class David Edington, Topeka, Headquarter and Headquarters Detachment, 169th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, and Sgt. Tye Robertson, Topeka, Detachment 1, 137th Transportation Company, will be participating in a Veterans Day Ceremony at Shawnee Heights Elementary School, 2410 SE Burton.  They will be speaking to the kindergarten class at 10:15 a.m.

Andover – Members of the 184th Intelligence Wing Color Guard will be folding the flag in a Veterans Day ceremony at Andover Court Assisted Living, 721 W. 21st.  The ceremony starts at 11 a.m.

Clifton – Master Sgt. Darell Keller, Abilene, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 169th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, will be the guest speaker for a ceremony sponsored by American Legion Post 227.  There will be a parade beginning at 2 p.m. followed by a program at Berner Memorial Park.

Cottonwood Falls – Chief Warrant Officer 4 Jason Garr, Salina, Headquarters and Headquarters Company (-), 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at Chase County All Veterans Memorial, Swope Park.  The ceremony begins at 10 a.m.  As part of the ceremony, a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army National Guard, will be on static display from 9:45 to 11 a.m.

Douglass – Sgt. 1st Class Mark Young, Wichita, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry (Combat Arms Battalion), will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day event at Marvin Sisk Middle School, 921 E 1st St.  The ceremony starts at 9:30 a.m.

Gardner – Lt. Col. Dave Johnson, Lenexa, 35th Infantry Division, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony held at 11 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Park, Center Street and Pawnee Lane, Gardner. 

Haysville – Members of the 184th Intelligence Wing Color Guard will be folding the flag in a Veterans Day ceremony at Prairie Elementary School, 7101 S. Meridian St.  The ceremony starts at 8:30 a.m. 

Kingman – Maj. Adam Krein, Wichita, 635th Support Group, will be the guest speaker at a 9 a.m. Veterans Day ceremony at Kingman High School, 260 W Kansas Ave.  This year marks the seventh year for the ceremony. 

Leavenworth – Brig. Gen. John Davoren, assistant adjutant general-Army and commander of the Kansas Army National Guard, will participate in a Veterans Day parade, which begins at 10:30 a.m.  The 35th Infantry Division, Fort Leavenworth, will also have several pieces of military equipment in the parade.

Lenexa - A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, will be doing a fly over at 9 a.m. as part of a Veterans Day celebration at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School, 15600 West 83rd Street.

LeRoy – Maj. Robert Stinson, Topeka, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program being held at the LeRoy School Gymnasium, 1010 N Main.

Olathe – Maj. Brian Schoenhofer, Spring Hill, 169th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day program being held at the American Legion Earl Collier Post 153, 410 E. Dennis.  The program begins at 4:30 p.m.

Overland Park – Brig. Gen. Deborah Rose, Overbrook, director of the Joint Staff, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at the Sprint Campus, 6180 Sprint Parkway.  The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.  The Kansas National Guard Family Programs will also be on hand to provide information on family support programs available to military members and their families.

Overland Park – The 73rd Civil Support Team (Weapons of Mass Destruction) will be participating in a Veterans Day event at Indian Woods Middle School, 9700 Woodson.  The 73rd CST will have an equipment display consisting of an analytical lab suite and their hazardous material weapons of mass destruction equipment (Level A training or response suit, air pack, and detection equipment). 

Pittsburg - Several members of the 891st Engineer Battalion, in conjunction with the Pittsburg State University Student Veterans Association, will be participating as part of a color guard for the ceremony being held at the Pittsburg State University Veterans Memorial at 11:00 a.m.

Pratt – Maj. Robert Wood, Wichita, and Master Sgt. Terry Goscha, Hutchinson, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 635th Support Group, will be the guest speakers at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at the All Veterans Memorial, north of Pratt on Highway 281.  The event will begin at 2 p.m. 

Valley Falls – The Kansas Army National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team will be posting and retiring the colors at the second annual community-wide Veterans Day ceremony being held at the Valley Falls High School gymnasium, 601 Elm St.  The event starts at 2 p.m.

Wichita – Col. Larry Hannan, Wamego, Joint Forces Headquarters Kansas-Land Component, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day event being hosted by the St. James Episcopal Church, 3750 E Douglas Ave.  The event will honor Lt. Erwin Bleckley, a native of Wichita and member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.  Bleckley, a field artilleryman from the Kansas National Guard, is only one of four Army Air Service aviators who received the Medal of Honor during World War I.  Bleckley was instrumental in locating the 1st Battalion, 308th Infantry, 77th Division, the “Lost Battalion.”

Wichita – Members of the 184th Intelligence Wing Color Guard will be folding the flag at a Veterans Day ceremony being held at 2:30 p.m. at the Wichita State University Speech Language Clinic, 5015 E. 29th. 

Maryville, Mo. – Maj. Gen. M. Wayne Pierson, Maryville, Mo., commander, 35th Division, will be speaking at the Nodaway County Court House on the city square. This event is conducted by the local American Legion Post # 100.

Kansas City, Mo. – Brig. Gen. Alexander Duckworth, Lee’s Summit, Mo., deputy commander, 35th Division, will be the guest speaker at the breakfast meeting of the Association of the United States Army.  The breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. and will be held at the Kansas City Marriott Downtown, 200 West 12th Street.

Events scheduled for Nov. 12

Newton – 1st Lt. Charles Ross, Wichita, Battery C, 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery, will be the guest speaker at a Veterans Day ceremony held at VFW Post 971, 1610 SE 3rd.  The event starts at 6 p.m.

Overland Park –A UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter from the 1st Battalion, 108th Aviation, Kansas Army Guard, will be on static display from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. as part of a Veterans Day ceremony being held at the Sprint Campus Paige Field, 6180 Sprint Parkway.

Events scheduled for Nov. 14

Kensington – Chief Warrant Officer 2 Mark Baxa, Salina, Detachment 1, 170th Maintenance Company, will be the guest speaker for a Veterans Day ceremony beginning at 11 a.m. at the American Legion, 114 S. Main.
